Maritsa Barros brings with her an impressive background from the realm of higher education and adds a wealth of experience to the I.C.E team. She obtained a B.A. from UMASS Dartmouth in Psychology with a minor in African & African American History. Subsequently, she acquired a M.S. in College Student Development & Counseling from Northeastern University where she also worked in the Admissions Office for seven years. While there, her focus was recruitment and retention with an emphasis to improve the number of students who earned a degree. “The most rewarding part of recruiting a student is watching him/her mature into a successful adult,” says Maritsa. Mentoring and advising students remain at the core of her passions.
She has consistently improved diversity on several different college/university campuses. Through her mentorship and student development Maritsa created a unique role for herself within the organizational structure at Framingham State University, where she served as the Assistant Director of Admissions for Diversity Outreach and Recruitment. Additionally, given her personal investment in student retention, she served as an instructor for the Freshmen Foundations Seminar course, also at Framingham State University. In this role, Maritsa educated and prepared freshmen for a seamless transition and success throughout their college experiences, assisting students to develop a 4-year strategic plan to discover their unique pathways to success. Maritsa believes that college is not a destination; but instead, it is a pathway. She continues to increase her knowledge of best practices as a long-standing member of National Association for College Admissions Counseling (NACAC) and New England Association for College Admissions Counseling (NEACAC). She is currently the Urban Scholars Initiative Coordinator at Lesley University in Cambridge, MA.
In her spare time, she has remained active in the fashion industry as a working model and a professional teacher. She has modeled for designer Carmen Marc Valvo and has recorded a training video for CVS Pharmacy. Her time as a professional instructor at Barbizon USA in Boston, she taught young girls in the areas of modeling, acting and self-development. Currently, she works closely with the Conrad Lamour brand, as an Executive Assistant of Event Planning, in support of Boston’s Brazilian Fashion, Boston En Vogue, and Providence Fashion Weeks.
Above all, Maritsa is also a family-oriented individual who comes from a large family of 12 siblings and over 30 nieces and nephews. With the many hats that Maritsa wears day to day, she is most passionate about her role as an aunt.
